Sunday 17 February brought about Saffron Walden & District Riding Club’s first show jumping competition of the year, held at a new venue, Green Farm in Stoke-by-Clare. Although the temperature was -4˚C whilst building the course in the morning the decision was made to jump outdoors on the large 60x35m arena. This proved to be a good decision as the sun shone all day and the competition definitely benefited from the great surface and large arena.
The first class of the day was the Novice which saw a SWDRC whitewash with all 6 places going to our junior members. The winner was Scarlet Simmons on Jessica who was one of only 3 clears in the jump off and finished an impressive 9 secs ahead of second placed Lucinda Gibson on Ludo, with Ellie Berisford and Partial Eclipse taking third.
The Intermediate class was well very supported and as such the results were split between horse and pony. The victor in the pony section was SWDRC member Bethany Brown and Ozzie who finished 1 sec ahead of second placed Freya Sommerville and Moth. SWDRC junior Nicola Hackshall and The Scrabbler won the horse section completing the jump off 4 secs faster than fellow junior member Robert Barker and Just Polly.
A large entry in the Small Open class meant that this too was split between horses and ponies. It was tight at the top of both sections with Robert Barker and Iceford Spotty just piping SWDRC senior Holly Barrett on Steely to first place in the pony section. SWDRC seniors Hazel Simmons with Billy and Suzannah Engelmann on Mr Chubbs took first and second in the horses.
The last class was the Open where junior member Ella Westerhuis and Sweet William took a comfortable victory over Suzannah Engelmann and Mr Chubbs, with junior Tessa Olley on Galaxy taking third.
Green Farm proved to be an excellent venue for us and we look forward to our next show jumping event there on 16 March. Many thanks to everyone who helped to run the event, whether you intended to or not. Thanks also go to everyone who helped pack the jumps away after the event - 15 minutes after the completion of the last class all the jumps were already back on the trailer – it just goes to prove that many hands really do make light work – Thank you! |
